Is it true that good friends are hard to come by?

Hello on Saturday!

Source: Flickr.
Today I want to share six wonderful idiomatic expressions with you. All of them concern family and/or social life. Take a look at them and make sure you know these expressions! They are very useful, especially for those who are taking their secondary school-leaving exam (matura) in English.

  • a friend in need is a friend indeed
  • be on the breadline
  • black sheep of the family
  • blood is thicker than water
  • good friends are hard to come by
  • run in the family

What do these idioms mean? Well, there you go...

  • a friend in need is a friend indeed - prawdziwych przyjaciół poznaje się w biedzie
  • be on the breadline - żyć na granicy ubóstwa
  • black sheep of the family - czarna owca w rodzinie
  • blood is thicker than water - bliższa ciału koszula
  • good friends are hard to come by - niełatwo jest zdobyć prawdziwych przyjaciół
  • run in the family - być cechą dziedziczną
A few examples from the Internet:
  • The old saying that a friend in need is a friend indeed is all too true.
  • When Sally's friends helped her move, she realized that a friend in need is a friend indeed.
  • Honestly, to look at her you'd think she was on the breadline , yet she gets a decent salary and has no dependants that I know of.
  • Perth was on the breadline while the Mariners plunged deep below it.
  • Lastly, Totsawin the eldest of the three, his father committed suicide and he feels that he is a black sheep of the family, he wants to be a cook and prove himself...
  • And if there is a “black sheep” of the family, he or she is most certainly going to appear from the abyss to stake claim to his or her share.
  • Alfred Hitchcock: I presume that story was intended to illustrate that blood is thicker than water.
  • My family and I are very close, especially my mother and I. I think that the saying that blood is thicker than water is so true on so many levels.
  • I have a lot of time for my Friends but of course these days good Friends are hard to come by but luckily for me I have some amazing ones!
  • These days, good friends are hard to come by. Sure, you chat to plenty of people every day, but how many of those will still be there when you need help?
  • If cancer has always run in the family and a family member believes that cancer will strike, then it will.
  • “I grew up loving cooking and food has always run in the family,” he says.
I'd like you to share your opinions on the following:
  1. Is it really true that a friend in need is a friend indeed?
  2. Why are there so many people who live on the breadline today when everybody keeps babbling we're living in a fast developing 21st century world?
  3. How often do parents treat their child as a black sheep of the family not doing anything to change this?
  4. Is it true that blood is always thicker than water?
  5. Would you agree that friends are really hard to come by these days? Why?
  6. What is it that has always run in your family?
Choose one question and share your point of view! TIA

    1. Thanks whynot. What do you mean by A-level exams? We're not in the UK :) Did you mean 'matura rozszerzona'? What exactly do you train and why? Are you a professional sportswoman?
