What do you know about Southeast Asia?

Today I want to talk about the area that is made up of ten countries:
  1. Brunei
  2. Burma
  3. Cambodia
  4. Indonesia
  5. Laos
  6. Malaysia
  7. Philippines
  8. Singapore
  9. Thailand
  10. Vietnam
We don't know much about these countries, do we? We hear about this or that country from time to time in the news. What makes this region so specific is the fact that all these countries are linked together by waterways. You can hardly avoid water there as the region is surrounded by oceans.

Since the climate in the region is hot, people farm rice which is the staple crop in Southeast Asia. The region is also rich in rainforest. Unfortunately, human activity consisting in cutting down these trees makes many people leave their indigenous habitat and settle down in cities.

For instance, the Penan people are known to live in the rainforests of Sarawak and it is them who are said to be suffering the most from deforestation.

What is also interesting is that people in the region live in very interesting houses... houses built on stilts (domy na palach). This solution is to protect those guys from floods during torrential rainstorms (ulewne burze).

It's also interesting to know that Singapore is one of Asia's richest countries. It owes it to its location, i.e. a point of contact between the Far East and the West.

Let's go to the capital city of Thailand for a while... Most of the city is below sea level so it had to develop a fantastic network of canals. Thus, it's a great tourist attraction to go to market by boat because traders also bring their goods to market by boat.

Of course, there are lots of other interesting things about these countries. In this post I just wanted to touch this amazing piece of our Earth. So...

If you are from any of the region's countries... please tell us more about your country! If you have visited any of those countries, also write here! TIA
