similes: I hope you are not sick today...

We have beautiful autumn this year, don't we? The major problem with autumn though is that it's the season associated with colds and flu. Thus today I would like to talk about another simile. Let's talk about the following simile

AS SICK AS A DOG

It's a nice simile which means very ill, extremely sick, vomiting a lot; I can't find anything similar in Polish; I guess we simply say 'chory' or 'bardzo chory'.

Anyhow, this is a very nice simile and here I found a nice explanation of when this simile came into use and how it is understood.

A few examples from the Internet:
  • Looking pretty even though she is as sick as a dog!
  • Sally was as sick as a dog and couldn't go to the party
  • Linda can't even get out of bed. She is as sick as a dog.
  • She was as sick as a dog after that curry.
  • Nellie Veitenheimer is stuck at home with the flu, she is as sick as a dog.
  • I caught that new strain of flu and for three days I was as sick as a dog.
I myself have been as sick as a dog a few times in my life. I remember the time when I was 11 years old and caught hepatitis. I was really as sick as a dog back then. It all started like regular flu normally does. So I experienced loss of appetite, I felt pain in muscles, I had nausea and slight abdominal pain... and I was vomiting... Eventually, I landed in hospital where I spent a whole month...

Anyhow, despite all the viruses that have become active this season, I do hope you will be able to stay healthy and will never be as sick as a dog :)

My question to you:
When were you as sick as a dog? What's your story?

  1. Everyone was just for once as ill as the dog. I remember how I was 16 years old and I was as ill as the dog. I had fever, the poor appetite, stomachache and the weakness. I caught zapalenie otrzewnej. Terrible illness. But I am also often going down with influenza and it is exactly my season.

    1. The idiom is: as sick as a dog, not as 'ill' as a dog. You say: a fever :) ZAPALENIE OTRZEWNEJ is PERITONITIS :) You should have said: a terrible illness. For things that happen regularly you use the present simple tense :) so you should have said ***I often go down***

Hmmm... Are you really serious about what you wrote here? Or is it just your forced comment to say something? :)

    1. What about vaccines? Have you ever tried to protect yourself against flu in this way?

  3. I have the same problem with the stomach. But I also often get ordinary influenza, and now it is my pathological period. Everyone several times is as sick as the dog.
